*As the name of the package suggests thousands of lakes, there aren't exactly 1000s of lakes. It has metaphorically derived from all the mythical stories of how this place once had thousands of lakes.

Dagala Thousand Lakes trek itinerary

You will start the trip in Paro, a lovely Bhutanese city situated 2,250 meters above sea level. Many travelers are not used to this elevation, so we have included two-night stays here to help you acclimate and avoid the risk of altitude sickness further on the trek.

During your time in Paro, you will visit many tourist sites like Ta Dzong Museum, Rinpung Dzong, Drukgyel Dzong, and Kyichu Lhakhang Gompa. Likewise, you will also hike to the Taktsang Monastery (3,120 m), aka Tiger's Nest Monastery.

It takes 2 hours of uphill climbing to reach the monastery. Taktsang Monastery is one of the significant monasteries in Bhutan. It is believed that Guru Rimpoche visited it on a tiger's back in the 8th century.

Legend further says he meditated in the cave where the monastery was built for three months. Have lunch and rest for a bit. From Paro, you will drive to Genekha Village, the starting point of the Dagala Thousand Lakes trek. Begin trekking following a downhill track that leads to a river and passes by terraced fields and coniferous trees.

Crossing the river, the trail ascends to Gur (3,350 m) for the night stay. Gur onwards, you will walk following high ridges and meadows and cross Paga Labtsa Pass (4,250 m). From the pass, descend to Labatamba Valley and trek past yak herder huts to reach Utsho Tso Lake.

The stunning mountain views, rugged landscapes, blooming meadows (in spring), and the stunning turquoise lake are blissful. You will spend a rest day in Labatamba (4,300 m) as well, so two days in total.

During your rest day, hike to other surrounding lakes such as Relitsho, Setsho, Hentsho, and Jagetsho.

Continuing the trek from Labatamba, you will walk uphill for 20 minutes and descend from the valley. The trail goes along the western side of Dala Tsho Lake, offering jaw-dropping mountain panoramas. Panka (4,000 m) is the final destination for this day.

From Panka, you will descend to Talikha, where the trek ends, and drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Here, you will explore many historical sites and museums, such as the National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha Temple, Drubthob Monastery, School of Arts and Crafts, National Library, Traditional Paper Factory, Folk Heritage Museum, etc.

Then, drive back to Paro and take your international flight from here.

Enjoy a spectacular flight to Paro. Upon landing at the Paro International Airport, our representatives will welcome you and drop you off at your hotel in Thimphu. As per your landing time, you may explore some tourist sites in Paro, like Ta Dzong Museum and Rinpung Dzong. Spend the remaining day in Paro acclimatizing and resting.

Today, you will go on a full-day guided tour in Paro. Early in the morning, hike to Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest Monastery. It will take 2 hours of uphill climbing to reach the monastery. The view of the monastery and waterfalls during hiking is mind-blowing.

Taktsang Monastery is one of the significant monasteries in Bhutan. It is believed that Guru Rimpoche visited it on a tiger's back in the 8th century. Legend further says he meditated in the cave where the monastery was built for three months. Have lunch and rest for a bit.

Later, you will visit the ruins of the 17th-century Drukgyel Dzong. This historical monument was built by Shabdrung to commemorate his victory against invading Tibetans in 1644. On clear days, the view of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m) is stunning.

Lastly, you will visit Kyichu Lhakhang gompa, which was made in the 7th century. It is one of the 108 temples the Tibetan king Songtse Gampo constructed.

You will start trekking. From Paro, you first have to drive to Genekha Village. You will reach here in 45 minutes' drive. From here, you will start walking downhill to a river.

The trail passes terraced fields and coniferous trees. Soon, you will begin climbing uphill, crossing a river. Hike until you reach a rock platform from which you can see a gorgeous valley view. Further, you have to trek for two more hours to reach Gur for the night.

From Gur, you will trek following high ridges, relishing rough and rugged landscapes. If you are trekking in the spring season, you can see meadows covered with flowers.

Cross the Paga Labtsa Pass (4,250 m), from where you will see a beautiful view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and the Dagala range. The trail then descends to Labatamba Valley and passes by yak herder huts.

You will reach Utsho Tso Lake, a stunning turquoise lake. Enjoy the serene view of the lake, then walk to the campsite.

Today, you will spend a rest day in Labatamba. Wake up early and have a big breakfast. After that, you will go on a hike to explore several nearby alpine lakes, such as Relitsho, Setsho, Hentsho, and Jagetsho.

During the hike, you will witness breathtaking mountain views and green hills. Have lunch and continue exploring the area. Return to your campsite to spend the night.

Leaving Labatamba, you will walk uphill for 20 minutes and descend the valley. The mountain views are phenomenal on this day. The trail ascends along the western side of Dala Tsho Lake.

You can see many mountains from here, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Jumolhari, Mt. Jichu Drake, Mt. Tshering Gang, Mt. Tsende Gang, Mt. Gangche Ta, Mt. Khangbum, etc.

The trail descends past yak herders' huts to Doccha Chhu River and then descends to Panka.

Leaving Panka, you will trek to Talikha, crossing many passes on the way. During the trek, you will come across many flowers and birds. It will be a lovely walk to Talikha. The trek ends here, and you will drive to Thimphu.

Stop at Wangdue Phodrang on the way and enjoy a fantastic view of the Dagala range. If the time allows, you will visit tourist sites like the National Library, Arts & Crafts School, Textile Museum, and Simply Bhutan Museum in Thimphu.

All these museums will give you great insights into Bhutanese texts, legends, manuscripts, art, textiles, culture, and traditions. After the tour, you will drive to Paro with your guide.

Start the day early with a delicious breakfast, then go on a guided sightseeing tour with your guide. Visit the National Memorial Chorten, built by the third king of Bhutan. Unfortunately, he died before the completion of the chorten, and the late queen's mother finished this monument in his memory.

Then, visit the Changangkha Temple, built in the 12th century. The tour continues to Drubthob monastery, which houses the Zilukha nunnery and the School of Arts and Crafts. At the school, you can see 13 types of Bhutanese art.

Likewise, stop at the National Library, which houses a huge collection of centuries-old Bhutanese sculptures. Later in the evening, you will visit the Traditional Paper Factory, Folk Heritage Museum, and Thimphu Market.
